Along
with the icon of the Madonna other items and icons were found,
witnessing the vigorousness of the monastery. Among them four
discs of Russian origin with the ancient Slavic script on
the outer circle. One of them depicts the known Old Testament
incident between Adam, Eve, and the snake.
The inhabitants
of the village, but also all the emigrants, are very attached
to the church of the Madonna and especially with the wonder-working
icon of "Panagia tou Valana". This piety of the
inhabitants has led them to a fund raising campaign for the
construction of a church in the area of the ancient monastery.
Panagia
tou Valana.
What was
the area of the village that today is named Valanas? Was it
a Byzantine church, an ancient monastery for men, an episcopate,
a feud? Nothing is absolutely certain. The only certain thing
is that the chapel of "Panagia tou Valana", which
is built today upon the hill with the same name, is not the
first construction in the area.

Under
the chapel there is a cistern in which water was stored. Other
such cisterns were found in the surrounding area, something
that proves that many people inhabited the vicinity. The surrounding
fields are ridden with fragments of tiles, broken earthenware
jars and other clay pots, proving that there was a settlement
in the region.
A section
of a floor mosaic, as well as the remains of an ancient oil-mill,
have been salvaged in the courtyard of the chapel. Also, before
the re-allotment of land that occurred, an extant water transportation
system could be found in the area.
In 1987,
the owner of the piece of land that lies in the east of the
chapel found some ancient findings while cultivating his field.
Unfortunately these findings disappeared. Whatever remained
was delivered to the officer of the Department of Antiquities
and today they are found in the Museum of Limassol; these
are a small column and a limestone head. Later on, a search
was conducted in the area but nothing was found to prove or
disprove the existence of a monastery in the area.
It is
said that the icon of "Panagia tou Valana" was found
in the hill of the same name during the Turkish domination.
A shepherd, attending his sheep as they were grazing, stroke
his crook and heard a peculiar sound as if he had hit on wood.
He dug and found a trunk in which laid the icon of "Panagia
tou Valana" and two "sanies" (large carved
metallic discs) with Sacerdotal Vestments in them. This icon
is found in the church of the village today. It is an icon
of the 12th century and neither its origin nor the place where
it was painted are known.
Right
after the discovery of the icon in the area, the inhabitants
of Laneia decided that they would be transferring the icon
to the place were it was found and would be conducting a mass
in its honour. Easter Monday was decided as the date when
the transfer would take place. Because no building was preserved
in the area the mass was conducted out in the open.
"Panagia
tou Valana" started gaining reputation outside Laneia
because occasionally it performed miracles. Many people went
to her grace and were healed. Apart from the local people,
the Madonna healed outlanders too and so, slowly-slowly, people
from neighbouring villages and faraway regions started to
attend her celebrating day.
On the
4th of May 1959, a decision was taken by the community to
construct a chapel. The inhabitants rushed and gathered contributions
and material from several people and in a period of three
months the chapel was built. So, on he 15th of August 1959,
they transfer the icon of the Madonna to the chapel and celebrate
the Assumption there for the first time.
The spot
were the chapel was raised was not selected by chance. Many
years ago, the people of the village observed a light, which
some called a star and some called an oil-lamp, suspended
from nowhere above the point were today the chapel stands.

After
the 1996 earthquake, the chapel had taken severe damages.
The community of Laneia expressed the desire to construct
a new chapel, bigger than the current one, in honour of "Panagia
tou Valana", so as to serve the large number of pilgrims
that swarm during the festive days of the Madonna. So, in
collaboration with the Holly Bishopric of Limassol, the construction
of a bigger, more spacious church has been decided; in the
future it will be used as the central Temple of a Monastery
that will be raised.
